This month I turned 36! I can hardly believe that I am nearer to 40 than 30!!
Like many people, each birthday tends to be a time for some personal reflection. Maybe I should rephrase that. Like many people who are at an age when a birthday is no longer just about celebrating like a wild young thing! That is not to say that I didn’t celebrate. I did. And it was lovely. But you probably know what I mean…
For me the significance of my birthday is less about the partying and more about the experiential, extraordinary things which the year I am passing out of has gifted to me, and about the wonder of what the new year will bring.
I’m not saying that my life is continuously extraordinary or wonderful. If it were I’d be giving up my day job and selling the formula world-wide - ‘fabulous formula for life’.
Daily life real time is made up of the routine, sometimes the mundane and often the stressful! As so many modern women find, it is often a challenge to juggle the daily demands we all cope with, with little thought of how we are doing it all – we just get on with it and do it!
So, when a birthday comes around, I think it should be an occasion not only to celebrate another year of life (which in itself is a pretty great gift, don’t you think?!), but also of what that life has entailed – at least in the past year. If you’re like me, going back much further than that can be a stretch.
There are many wise sayings (and Facebook posts) to the effect that Happiness Comes From Within. As much as I have achieved in the past twelve months in my work and my family, I believe it’s important to think about what I have achieved for me. What I have done for myself, to enrich my life’s journey. Because at the end of the day, we each have just the one life. It’s easy to lose oneself in the busyness of domestic, familial, community and professional needs and aspirations.
How did I do? Not too bad.
I traveled a lot (although less than the previous years), experienced new places and new cultures. The third wonder of my life, our baby boy was born. My eldest children surprised me every day with something new, with something beautiful.
I had so many unforgettable and cheerful moments which I am really grateful for!
And like every mother, wife, business woman, I could do better. Though I am pretty sure I am not alone, am I?!
